Spokane is the airport, and the drive in is two straight legs of about forty-five minutes each.

    Spokane is the nearest airport, about 80 miles southwest of Sandpoint. Head east on I-90 across Washington and into Idaho.

    North on US-95, over the Long Bridge

    US-95 runs north to Sandpoint, crossing the Long Bridge over the southern end of Lake Pend Oreille on the way in. That crossing is the point where the scale of the lake becomes obvious.

How far is Dover from Sandpoint?

Three miles, west on Highway 2. Close enough that Sandpoint is where you would do your shopping and eat out, and far enough that you are not staying in town.

How do I get here from Spokane?

Spokane International is the nearest airport, about 80 miles southwest of Sandpoint. Take I-90 east into Idaho, then US-95 north — roughly forty-five minutes each — crossing the Long Bridge on the way in. Dover is three miles beyond Sandpoint on Highway 2.

How big is Lake Pend Oreille?

148 square miles, which makes it the largest lake in Idaho, and 1,158 feet deep, which makes it the fifth deepest in the United States.

Does the US Navy really test submarines in the lake?

Yes, though not full-sized ones. The Acoustic Research Detachment at Bayview, part of the Naval Surface Warfare Center's Carderock Division, tests scale models to measure how quietly submarine designs run. The lake is around 1,150 feet deep near Bayview, which mimics deep-ocean conditions without the noise and cost of the open sea. The work dates back to the 1960s.
